2024 Co-creation to Communities (Co2) Upcycling Exhibition
Joining forces with institutions and sheltered workshops
to unleash the power of upcycling and drive sustainable development
St. James' Settlement Jockey Club Upcycling Centre (“Jockey Club Upcycling Centre”) is delighted to host the 2024 Co-creation to Communities (“Co2”) Exhibition at the K11 Art Mall Piazza underway until 3 July. The exhibition features 60 upcycled products designed by students from two educational institutions and produced by people with disabilities (“PWDs”) from five sheltered workshops, on the themes of environmental sustainability and inclusivity. The exhibits highlight the unique creativity of the students and the craftsmanship of the PWDs.
Organized by Jockey Club Upcycling Centre, the exhibition was curated in collaboration with 90 students from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong. The students utilized various recycled materials, such as discarded umbrellas and cotton from pillows, for their upcycling designs. The production of the 60 upcycled products was facilitated by five sheltered workshops, namely The Christian Family Service Centre - Tsui Yip Co-Production Centre, Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council - The Providence Garden for Rehab Integrated Vocational Rehabilitation Services, New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association - Tin King Sheltered Workshop, The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Creative Workshop, and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals - Hung Fuk Integrated Vocational Rehabilitation Centre. The exhibition opened today with a prestigious opening ceremony in the presence of official guests including Ms. Maggie Leung, Assistant Director (Rehabilitation and Medical Social Services) of Social Welfare Department, Ms. Josephine Lee, Chief Executive Officer of St. James' Settlement and Ms. Sing Yip, Manager, Charities of The Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Ms. Josephine Lee, Chief Executive Officer of St. James' Settlement, said, “We are thankful for the support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust over the past eight years, which has enabled Jockey Club Upcycling Centre to collaborate with various designers and sheltered workshops, resulting in the development of over 200 products with the production output of over 110,000 items. Moving forward, the Centre will continue to join hands with people with disabilities and nurture more local upcycling designers to promote the concepts of environmental sustainability and social inclusion to the public.”
Matching trained students with sheltered workshops
Jockey Club Upcycling Centre provided a variety of training, including guest sharing, seminars and workshops on sewing and carpentry techniques, for participating students, leading to a deeper understanding of sustainable development by transforming unwanted materials into useful products.
For example, the "Re Blossom Upcycled Raincoat" fully utilizes the waterproofing properties and original functionality of discarded umbrellas, transforming them into fashionable raincoats. The "EcoLeash Revival Upcycled Dog Leash" extends the lifespan of discarded pet clothing with the involvement of PWDs in the sewing process, resulting in unique and stylish dog leashes that allow pets to express their own style. Several of these products have also been funded for participation in the Red Dot Design Award, an international design award, and Hong Kong Smart Design Awards, a local design competition. These successes are injecting new energy into the upcycling design industry.
Jockey Club Upcycling Centre has also partnered with five sheltered workshops to produce upcycled products, with the students serving as mentors. This matching initiative provides the sheltered workshops with opportunities to enter the upcycling market and allow people with disabilities to become involved in upcycling production. It also raises the students’ awareness of the capabilities of the sheltered workshops, effectively promoting the concept of upcycling and fostering a more inclusive society.

About St. James’ Settlement
Founded by the Rt. Rev. Bishop R.O. Hall of the Anglican Church in 1949, St. James’ Settlement began as a club for boys and girls in a temple in Stone Nullah Lane, Wanchai. It was then developed into a six-storey building on Kennedy Road in 1963 to provide diversified services, including children and youth services, elderly services and rehabilitation services. In 1987, the headquarters was opened in Stone Nullah Lane so that the scope of services could be further extended. Our first centre outside Wanchai (named Central and Western District Elderly Community Centre) was established in 1990. Since then, different service centres have been developed and most of them are located along the north coast of Hong Kong Island, from The Belcher’s in Western to Hing Wah Estate in Chai Wan. In recent years, in view of the society’s ever-changing needs, we have opened service centres in Kowloon and the New Territories. To date, our 96 service points are in operation across Hong Kong. Now, St. James’ Settlement served more than 3.23 million person-times, and our target beneficiaries include children, teenagers, families, the elderly and people with disabilities.
